What is the Tokushima University Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Unit？
The Emergency and Critical Care unit is the central medical department for critical and emergency patients, both from inside and outside the hospital. We provide treatment for critical and emergency patients and postoperative care after cardiovascular and transplant surgery and the like. In case of patients from other institutions, we provide treatment for all three severe criticalities, which are tertiary emergency patients, poisoned patients, and patients with severe burns. Be it surgery or internal medicine, we provide treatment for various organ dysfunctions by mechanical ventilation, cardiovascular assist, blood purification, and like. As a stroke center, our neurosurgery and neurology team diagnoses impaired consciousness proactively at its early stages. We are achieving results in medical treatment for stroke and brain hemorrhage patients. In the multidisciplinary ward (4th floor of Tokushima University Hospital), we have 11 beds for ICU, 9 beds for stroke care unit, and 12 beds for intermediate care unit. In addition to 7 specialized doctors, 5-6 doctors from each department are active here in medical treatment of patients. We are one of the most exceptional Closed-ICUs n Japan. We contribute to a full-fledged hospital level facility as we provide a comprehensive treatment to critical care patients. It is the kind of department that is essential for acute phase treatment.
